Gramont, Antoine-Agénor, duke de
(1819-1880)
   diplomat, political figure
Born in Paris, Antoine-Agénor, duke of Gramont, served during the second empire as minister plenipotentiary to Kassel (1852), Stuttgart, and Turin (1853), then as ambassador to Rome (1857) and to vienna (1860). He supported French intervention in italy (1860) while assuring the independence of the pope. He later supported a French rapprochement with Austria (against Prussia). Named foreign minister through the endorsement of Empress Eugénie (May 1870), he was, by his interventions, partly responsible for the declaration of war by France on Prussia (July 15, 1870), bringing about the franco-prussian war (1870-71).
